Save the Ta-Tas!

Wow… So far I have not been good with the updates. That’s going to change though! First, just wanted to point out that if you want to make a donation, please follow the link in the column on your right- it goes to my personal donation page. The links for my other team members will be coming shortly. Please donate!!

Anyway, fundraising is not easy. It can be difficult to get people to part with their hard earned money and, though understandable, it can be very frustrating. But it can also be a lot of fun and rewarding and some of the people you meet along the way make all the frustration worth it…

This is what I found out at team Booba’licious’ first fundraising event. There was a hockey tournament called the Dodge Cup in Greenfield Park from April 12th to the 15th. We had a table set up where we were collecting donations. It was a girl’s tournament so we figured that would be a good place to start our fundraising. Initially, our intention was just to set up a table and collect donations. And that worked. But we happened to have pink cowboy hats with us on our first day and those quickly sold out. We realized quickly that it’s a lot easier to get people to part with their money if we can somehow offer them something in return. By the time day 2 rolled around, we were selling homemade bracelets (courtesy of moi J ), magnets (thanks Mel!), along with various other breast cancer paraphernalia and pink items. Donations picked up after that! It cost us more money, but in the end, we managed to get more donations. So selling items works. So does using adorable 4 year olds to ask for money. Thank you Emily!

All in all, it was a good weekend. It never fails to amaze me how generous some people can be. A special thank you to Randy who supported us by buying lots of items…

It also really hit home how many people have been touched by this disease. It definitely motivated my teammates and I to do as much as we can to raise money towards this cause. We’re a long way from our goal of $12,000…

So thanks again to everyone who helped us raise over $500 for the weekend! Stay tuned for information on upcoming Booba’licious fundraisers!

Let the fundraising begin!

So I started this blog because I wanted someplace to document my team’s fundraising efforts for breast cancer.  On September 30, 2007 our team, Boobalicious, will be participating in a 5km run/walk for breast cancer. Yes, it’s only 5 km. I feel like I have to apologize for not doing the 60 km walk. It’s just that our team has at least 10 members and it’s hard to organize everyone- it’ll be summer, members have kids, there’ll be vacations… Not everyone is able to commit to that weekend. And we want everyone to participate. But our fundraising goals are the same, even if the walk is shorter. We want  to raise at least $12,000 and I know we can do it!

I am so happy with our group! This is the third year that some of our members will be participating. It’ll be my second. We’ve all been touched by the disease in some way and we’re all super enthusiastic to do our part in kicking out the disease. And our enthusiasm shows. Two years ago our team made the cover of The Montreal Gazette. Last year we made it onto a breast cancer website. I guess we’re pretty good at bringing attention to oursleves and to the cause :-)

The fundraising begins in earnest tomorrow at the Dodge Cup in Greenfield Park. We will be there collecting money for the next 4 days. I’m really hoping that we’ll raise a lot of money this weekend. We won’t have to do much, but it’ll be long.  The more creative fundraising events will be coming up in the next few months. I will keep you all posted!
